1987 -ish Mustang GT - The New Monkees kit

The car that introduced me to a sensation of being pressed back into your seat, when conspicuously roaring away from a stoplight... a graphite grey '85 Mustang GT convertible that was so new it still smelled like the showroom, owned by my uncle, and piloted by my older cousin who offered to take the youngsters for a ride...

Only a couple years later, Monogram released The New Monkees Mustang GT Convertible kit in 1:24 scale, and it was plastered across K-Mart's model kit section, and Kay-Bee Toys even carried it.  Back then I built it in black with a grey interior, and for a kid's attempt it came out alright.  At the time, my uncle was still alive and well and my cousin quickly inherited the Mustang - compared to the '79 Continental Town Car that he traded in for the ponycar, the ride in the Mustang was so rigid that he kept spilling coffee.  He then found a Chrysler New Yorker Mark Cross to have suitable yacht-like characteristics.

In the 1980s it didn't matter to me that the kit's interior, chassis and engine were incorrect for the newly re-styled 1987 Fox platform Mustang.  In 2012, it still didn't matter... it's a fun kit because everything seems to fit where it's intended, and it makes for a satisfying build despite the technical inaccuracies.  Accumulating reference material was tricky, because of the need to switch from pre-86 to post-87 images for different detailing steps.  Many years after this kit's introduction, after my uncle's passing and more recently Davey Jones from the original Monkees, a tribute car seemed fitting... great experiences along the way, and great memories.
